We here at Friends of Skamokawa/Redmen Hall are proud to present a Book Signing/Reading of this special 30th anniversary edition of Wintergreen: Rambles in a Ravaged Land by notable guest, author Robert M. Pyle on Sunday, November 29th from 12:00 to 4:00 pm at Redmen Hall. 

This 30th Anniversary edition of Robert M. Pyle's Wintergreen: Rambles in a Ravaged Land, has just been released by Pharos Editions with a new introduction by David Guterson and updated afterword by the author. The 1987 John Burroughs Medal for best natural history book of the year, Wintergreen remains as relevant today as when it first appeared.

Between 12:00-3:00 pm Robert Pyle will be here to sign books, answer questions and discuss this timeless and important piece of literature. The reading will be presented between 3:00 to 4:00 pm.

Wintergreen is a tale of survival. In the Willapa Hills of southwest Washington, both the human community and the forest community are threatened with extinction. Weaving vivid portraits of the place and its inhabitants—animal, plant, and human—with the story of his own love affair with the hills, Robert Michael Pyle has written a book so even-handed in its passion that it has been celebrated by those who make their living with a chain saw as well as by environmentalists. As he writes, “My sympathies lie with the people and the woods, but not with the companies that have used them both with equal disregard.”

Author bio: ROBERT MICHAEL PYLE is the author of eighteen books, including Chasing Monarchs, The Thunder Tree: Lessons from an Urban Wildland, Sky Time in Gray’s River: Living for Keeps in a Forgotten Place and the recent poetry collection Evolution of the Genus Iris. A Yale-trained ecologist and a Guggenheim fellow, he is a full-time writer and naturalist living in the Willapa Hills of southwestern Washington.

Contributor Bio: David Guterson is the author of the novels East of the Mountains, Our Lady of the Forest, The Other, Ed King, and Snow Falling on Cedars, which won the PEN/Faulkner Award; two story collections, The Country Ahead of Us, the Country Behind and Problems With People; a poetry collection, Songs for a Summons; a memoir, Descent; and Family Matters: Why Homeschooling Makes Sense. "Deck the Hall" Holiday Gift/Open House Opening Weekend November 27, 28 and 29

Our annual holiday gift/open house, “Deck the Hall,” will begin November 27 through December 13^th Thursday-Sunday 12-4 PM.  

Our Holiday Gift/Open House schedule will be:

"Deck the Hall" will continue through the next two weekends:  Thursdays-Sundays from 12-4.  The last day is December 13.  

There will be refreshments and live music from local musicians the opening weekend. Local author Robert Pyle will here on Sunday November 29th between the hours of 12:00 to 4:00 pm for a Book Signing/Reading of his book Wintergreen: Rambles in a Ravaged Land with the reading scheduled for 3:00 pm.

Though too humble call art a talent, Charles Funk of Chehalis does say it's been a part of his life as long as he can remember.

"I went to a school reunion once and my second grade teacher came up and said, ‘I remember you. You used to draw in the margins of all your papers,'" Funk said. "It's become a way of life."
Through a lifetime of artistic endeavors, Funk has thrown himself into a variety of media. Just to name a few, he's been involved in commercial art, illustrative work, oil paintings, watercolors, screen printing and carving. A common thread through most of his endeavors, though, is the inspiration from his family history and childhood memories of Willapa Harbor and the Chinook Indian Tribe.
"When I'm just sitting and loose drawing things I do Willapa Harbor," Funk said. "That or dancing bunnies, but that's for the children."

Funk has been involved with the Chinook Tribe and the Quinault Indian Reservation since his grandparent's generation. His father worked on the reservation in the Indian Conservation Corps, which was an organization similar to the Civilian Conservation Corps. More recently, Funk has been a member of the Chinook Tribal Council for two years.

The 2,000-member Chinook Tribe, based near Astoria, Oregon, is not yet recognized by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, though they are working on reinstatement. Funk said Northwest Indian is a popular art style with local artists, but what makes his art unique is it is drawn specifically from the traditions of the Chinook Tribe. Though it is similar to many local Native art styles, it has its own flavor, he explained. The paintings featured: "Tide Water" and "Between Two Islands" by Charles Funk.

The Exhibit will run from October 10th to November 22nd. Redmen Hall is open Thursday through Sunday from 12 noon to 4 P.M. It is located in beautiful downtown Skamokawa at 1394 W.SR4. For more information call Redmen Hall (360-795-3007) during open hours.

Artists Bob and Jenny Kizziar - Art Exhibit Opening - Saturday, August 8th at Redmen hall from 1:00-3:00 pm

Art exhibit opening, Saturday, August 8th at Redmen Hall from 1:00-3:00 pm!  Artists Bob Kizziar and Jenny Kizziar will be here at Redmen Hall to discuss their work and to share about themselves and their creative process. We will be serving refreshments and all are welcome to come join in the festivities. Redmen Hall is located at 1394 SR4 in Skamokawa Washington. Our hours are 12noon- 4pm, Thursday-Sunday and you can call for information during those hours -360-795-3007.

Bob and Jenny Kizziar have exhibited their work throughout the United States and Europe and have given seminars in art gatherings in the American West, Germany, and Ireland.

Background/Bio-Bob Kizziar-Ceramic/Metal Sculpture:

Since the mid 1970’s Bob has dedicated a great part of his life to clay.  The vessel has been his consistent form of expression.  Bob is a superb craftsman when it comes to the use of the potter’s wheel.  It is the finishes of his work, however, that bring him distinction.  Bob’s pottery surfaces have a design derived from a balance of chance and control in the firing process and his pieces have a presence that is enhanced by the contrast of their rough-hewn forms while the process and the artist’s hand are evident in the elegant finishes.

Bob has had his work accepted in exhibitions across the nation and internationally, and enjoys an extensive national list of collectors. Bob and his wife Jenny Kizziar have conducted and participated as experts in workshops throughout the west and in Ireland and Germany.
Bob has spent many years in various capacities as an Arts Administrator including serving as Chairman of the Art Department at Fresno City College. He was the founding president of the San Joaquin Clay Association, served on the advisory board of the Buyer’s Market of American Craft, Vice President of the California Craft Network, an Artist Facilitator for the State of California, the first Gallery Director and Vice President of the Kings River Arts Council, served on the board of the Stonehouse Artists in Residency and was a full time ceramics instructor at Reedley and Fresno City College. Bob lives in Cathlamet Washington with his wife Jenny and dog Cutter.

Background/Bio-Jenny Kizziar: Weaving, beautiful- wearable natural fiber art pieces:

Jenny originally worked with porcelain producing delicate pots and small pieces, but was always drawn to weaving. Bob bought her a loom 5 years ago and she started producing work that she felt was at last expressing her artistic vision. She uses soft, muted colors and a wide variety of fibers creating elegant pieces of wearable art.  Come on out and support these local artists, Friends of Skamokawa and Redmen Hall. See you there!
